Chemical Hose Selection: Matching Tube Material to the Media
Chemical hose failures don't announce themselves — the tube degrades from the inside while the cover looks fine. That's why chemical transfer hose is selected by tube chemistry first, and why every assembly we build for acid or solvent service goes out tested and tagged. Here's the selection logic.
Start With the Compatibility Chart, Every Time
Identify the exact chemical, concentration, and temperature — 93% sulfuric behaves nothing like 20% sulfuric — then verify the tube material against the hose manufacturer's chemical resistance chart. "It handled it last time" is not a rating. When in doubt, send us the SDS and we'll run the compatibility check with the manufacturer.
The Three Main Tube Materials

Don't Forget Cover, Fittings & Gaskets
The cover needs to survive the outside world — EPDM covers resist chemical splash and ozone, and corrugated covers keep bend radius manageable on larger sizes. Fittings must match the media just like the tube: 316 stainless is the default for aggressive service, with PTFE-lined or poly camlocks for the harshest media. Camlock gaskets are part of the fluid path too — spec Viton or PTFE-encapsulated, not the Buna that came in the box.
Safety Practices for Acid Transfer
Full-vacuum-rated hose for tank truck unloading, static bonding for flammables, whip checks at connections, and a documented inspection cycle: look for cover blisters, soft spots, kinks, and fitting slippage before every use. Hydrostatic retest per your site schedule — we do this in-house with test documentation.
