The Three Pharma Hose Families

Platinum-cured silicone is the flexible workhorse for transfer of buffers, media, WFI, and final product: exceptionally clean extractables profile, -60 to 350°F, clear or reinforced constructions, and the easiest hose to handle in a suite. Limits: not for oils/solvents, and repeated SIP shortens life. Convoluted PTFE with sanitary ends handles solvents, aggressive APIs, and repeated steam cycles that silicone can't — the choice for chemical-step processing. FDA rubber sanitary hose (butyl or EPDM tube) covers utility and less-critical transfer economically where full pharma documentation isn't required.

CIP/SIP Limits

Confirm the assembly — hose plus fitting attachment method — is rated for your cleaning regime, not just the tube material. Typical guidance: silicone handles CIP chemicals readily and limited SIP cycles at 250–265°F; PTFE takes repeated SIP without degradation. Crimped sanitary ends with encapsulated attachment (no wetted crevices) are the standard; barbed-and-clamped ends don't belong in product contact.

Handling & Lifecycle

Dedicate hoses per product or step, tag with install date and lot, hang to drain, and replace on a validated interval rather than on visual failure — silicone especially degrades from the inside under repeated steam. Keep certs filed with the hose ID for audit day.
