Petroleum transfer hose lives a hard life — dragged across pads, run at full vacuum, flexed at racks in Gulf summer heat — while carrying flammables. Selection is straightforward if you work through media, vacuum, bonding, and testing in that order.

Tube Selection by Fuel

Nitrile tubes are the petroleum standard, graded by aromatic tolerance: standard grades handle gasoline, diesel, and fuel oils to roughly 50% aromatics; high-aromatic and biofuel blends (E85, high-ethanol, some solvents-in-fuel streams) call for upgraded tube compounds or composite/UHMW alternatives. Crude with H2S and hot asphalt each have dedicated constructions — state the exact product and temperature rather than "fuel."

Suction vs Discharge

Tank truck unloading pulls vacuum, so specify corrugated or wire-helix hose rated for full vacuum (29.9 in-Hg) — a discharge-only hose flattens at the pump inlet and starves it. Static Bonding Is a Spec Item

Flowing hydrocarbons generate static. Hose for flammable transfer must provide a continuous bonding path — static wire construction terminated at both couplings, or conductive tube/cover compounds — verified by continuity test after assembly and after any recoupling. A static wire that isn't captured under the ferrule is decoration.

Vapor Recovery

Stage I vapor return lines need lightweight, full-vacuum-rated hose sized to the rack's vapor spec — composite hose dominates here for weight and flexibility. Keep vapor and liquid hoses distinctly marked; they are not interchangeable.

Testing & Retirement

Follow a documented program: visual inspection each use (cover cuts to reinforcement, soft spots, kink memory, coupling slippage), periodic hydrostatic test at the manufacturer's test pressure, and continuity verification for bonded assemblies — all with records. We hydrostatic and continuity test in-house and tag every assembly with test date and pressure.
