Tri-Clamp Fittings: Sanitary Connections for Pharma & Food Processing
Tri-clamp (also called tri-clover) connections are the standard for hygienic process piping: two flanged ferrules, a molded gasket, and a clamp that pulls it all together with no threads, no crevices, and full CIP/SIP cleanability. Pharmaceutical suites, breweries, and food plants run on them — and the two most common ordering mistakes are sizing and gasket chemistry.
Sizing: The Ferrule Isn't the Tube
Tri-clamp size refers to the nominal tube OD, not the ferrule flange diameter. A 1.5" tri-clamp fits 1.5" OD tube but has a ferrule flange of about 1.98" — and confusingly, 1/2" and 3/4" fittings often share the same 25mm ferrule flange. Measure the tube OD, not the clamp face, and you'll order right the first time.

For validated pharma service, specify USP Class VI / FDA CFR 177.2600 compliant gaskets with lot traceability. Replace elastomer gaskets on a preventive schedule — a swollen or cracked gasket is a bioburden trap.
Ferrules, Finishes & BPE
Sanitary fittings are 316L with interior finishes called out by Ra: 32 µin (0.8 µm) is typical dairy/food grade, while ASME BPE SF1–SF4 finishes (down to 15 µin electropolished) govern pharmaceutical WFI and clean steam systems. For BPE piping, specify fittings with material heat certs and surface finish documentation for your turnover package.
Clamps & Assembly
Standard single-pin clamps suit most process duty; high-pressure bolted clamps handle elevated pressures and prevent unauthorized opening. Snug clamps evenly — over-tightening extrudes the gasket into the flow path, which defeats the hygienic design.
