Temperature is one of the most common reasons hydraulic hose fails early. Both the fluid inside and the air outside age the rubber, so you have to account for each.

Typical Temperature Ratings

Most general-purpose hydraulic hose is rated for roughly -40 F to +212 F (-40 C to +100 C) on petroleum-based fluids. Specialty compounds extend that range: some run continuously to +302 F (+150 C), and cold-flex covers stay pliable well below -40 F. Always read the specific hose spec, because ratings vary by tube and cover compound.

Why Fluid Temperature and Ambient Heat Both Count

The published rating usually refers to the fluid temperature. High ambient heat, engine bays, or radiant sources near a hose can push the actual wall temperature higher than the fluid alone. As a rule of thumb, every 18 F (10 C) above the rated maximum can cut hose life roughly in half.

Options for Extreme Temperature

• High-heat hose with a special tube and cover for hot fluids.
• Heat sleeves and firesleeve to protect against radiant heat and incidental flame.
• Cold-flex hose for freezer, arctic, and winter outdoor service.
• Routing changes to move hose away from manifolds and exhaust.
