Wire Rope Sling Capacity, Inspection, and the 5:1 Design Factor
A wire rope sling is only as safe as its rated capacity and its last inspection. Here is how the numbers work and what to look for before every lift.
What the 5:1 Design Factor Means
Under ASME B30.9, wire rope slings are built to a minimum 5:1 design factor, meaning the sling is rated to break at roughly five times its working load limit (WLL). That margin covers wear, shock loading, and normal handling; it is not spare capacity to be used up.
Capacity Depends on the Hitch
- Vertical hitch: full rated capacity.
- Choker hitch: reduced, often to about 75 percent of the vertical rating.
- Basket hitch: can be up to double, but only with adequate pin diameter and proper load contact.
Sling Angle Changes Everything
As the angle between the sling leg and the horizontal decreases, tension in each leg climbs fast. A load lifted at a 30-degree angle can put roughly double the tension in each leg compared with a straight vertical pull. Always read the tag and use a tension chart; never guess.
Inspection Points
Per OSHA 1910.184, remove a wire rope sling from service for broken wires (ten randomly distributed in one rope lay, or five in one strand), kinking, crushing, birdcaging, heat damage, corrosion, or a missing or unreadable tag.
