Camlock Fittings 101: Types, How to Install, and How to Measure
Cam and groove couplings, better known as camlock fittings, are the fastest way to connect and disconnect industrial hose without tools. This guide covers the standard fitting types, how to install them correctly, and how to measure so you order the right size the first time.
What Is a Camlock Fitting?
A camlock is a two-part quick-connect coupling. One half has a grooved adapter; the other half is a coupler with two cam arms. Push the adapter into the coupler, close the arms, and a gasket creates a leak-tight seal. Because there are no threads to chase, an operator can make a connection in seconds, which is why camlocks dominate bulk liquid, fuel, and dry-material transfer.
Camlock Fitting Types (A Through DP)
- Type A - Male adapter x female thread (NPT or BSP).
- Type B - Female coupler x male thread.
- Type C - Female coupler x hose shank.
- Type D - Female coupler x female thread.
- Type E - Male adapter x hose shank.
- Type F - Male adapter x male thread.
- Type DC - Dust cap that closes a male adapter.
- Type DP - Dust plug that closes a female coupler.
In practice, a hose assembly usually pairs a Type C or Type E shank end on the hose with a Type A, B, D, or F on the equipment side.
How to Install a Camlock Fitting
- Match the shank size to the hose ID and secure it with the correct clamp or crimp collar - not a single worm-gear clamp on pressure service.
- Inspect the gasket and replace worn, swollen, or chemically attacked seals. Most leaks start here.
- Seat the adapter fully into the coupler before closing the arms.
- Close both cam arms evenly. For pressure or vibration service, add safety pins or clips so the arms cannot bounce open.
How to Measure a Camlock Fitting
Camlock size refers to the nominal hose or pipe size, not the physical outside diameter. A 2-inch camlock mates with 2-inch hardware even though the machined groove measures larger. Confirm size by measuring the inside diameter of the hose shank or reading the size stamped on the body, and always match size and material on both halves.
Choosing the Right Material
Aluminum is the economical default for water, fuel, and oil. Stainless steel handles aggressive chemicals, food, and marine service. Brass and polypropylene fill specialty roles. The gasket matters as much as the body - Buna, Viton, EPDM, and PTFE each suit different media and temperatures.
