Composite Hose for Petroleum & Chemical Transfer: How It Works
Composite hose looks unusual next to rubber — a corrugated, fabric-wrapped body between two wire helixes — and behaves unusually too: lighter, more flexible, and safer in transfer service. It's the standard for tank truck loading racks, marine transfer, and vapor recovery for reasons worth understanding before you spec it.
How Composite Hose Is Built
Instead of one extruded tube, composite hose seals with multiple overlapping layers of thermoplastic films and fabrics — often a dozen or more — clamped between an inner and outer wire helix. The multi-film design means no single-point tube failure: a breach must work through many layers, giving warning (weeping) rather than sudden release. The wire helixes carry pressure and full vacuum while keeping the hose remarkably light — typically 30–50% lighter than rubber equivalents, which operators loading trucks all day appreciate.

The films are selected to match — polypropylene films for hydrocarbons, PTFE film liners for harsh chemical grades. Electrical continuity end-to-end is a spec item, not an assumption: flammable transfer requires a continuity-tested, bonded assembly.
Where Composite Beats Rubber
Tank truck and railcar loading (light weight, kink resistance, full vacuum), marine dock hose, vapor recovery lines, and aviation refueling. The corrugated construction bends tight without collapsing, and the fail-weep behavior is a genuine safety feature at loading racks. Limits: composite is a transfer hose, not an abrasion or high-pressure hose — typical ratings run 100–250 psi — and crushing damage to the outer wire retires the hose immediately.
Inspection & Testing
Check for kinked or flattened wire, cover damage exposing films, weeping at the layers, and fitting slippage. Periodic hydrostatic and electrical continuity testing per EN 13765 or your site standard keeps assemblies in documented service — testing we perform in-house with certs.
