High-Purity Fittings for Semiconductor Fabs: VCR, Tube & UHP Basics
Semiconductor process gases are measured against parts-per-trillion contamination budgets, and the fittings that carry them are engineered accordingly. VCR: The Metal-Seal Standard
VCR-style face seal fittings seal by compressing a metal gasket between two polished glands — no elastomer, no thread lubricant, no particle-shedding surfaces in the gas path. That gives leak rates in the 10-9 std cc/sec helium range and full bake-out capability. Gaskets are single-use: nickel for general UHP service, 316L stainless for corrosive gases, copper for specific duties. Sizes run 1/4" through 1" face seal, with male/female glands, nuts, and a full ecosystem of valves and regulators built around the interface.
Electropolished 316L Tubing
UHP gas lines use 316L tubing with controlled sulfur chemistry, electropolished interiors specified by Ra — commonly 10 µin for high-purity and 5–7 µin EP for UHP — and orbital welding rather than mechanical joints wherever possible. Tubing arrives cleaned, purged, and double-bagged; it stays capped and bagged until the moment of installation. Handling Rules That Protect Purity
Open UHP components only in the cleanroom or a purged environment; never reuse metal gaskets; keep tools dedicated and degreased; purge lines with certified gas during and after work; and document every joint — fabs require weld maps, material certs, and cleanliness certifications in the turnover package.
Where Standard Industrial Hardware Fits
A fab is mostly not UHP: cooling water, CDA, vacuum, slurry, waste, and CMP support systems run on the industrial hose, 316 fittings, tri-clamp hardware, and gasketing we stock every day.
