An expansion joint is not a pipe fitting you order by size — it is a movement device, and specifying one from the pipe diameter alone is the single most common reason they fail early.
What an Expansion Joint Actually Does
Piping grows and shrinks. A carbon steel line running 400°F above ambient expands roughly an inch every forty feet, and that growth has to go somewhere. Left unaccommodated it loads nozzles, cracks anchors and pulls equipment out of alignment.
A metal bellows expansion joint absorbs that movement in a thin-walled convoluted element while still containing full line pressure. The bellows is the working part; the flanges, liners and hardware around it exist to protect and control it.
Types of Expansion Joint
Type selection follows from which movements the joint must absorb and how the piping is anchored.
- Single expansion joint — one bellows, absorbing axial movement. The simplest and most common, and it requires the piping to be properly anchored and guided.
- Universal expansion joint — two bellows separated by a center spool, giving significant lateral offset capability that a single cannot.
- Tied expansion joint — tie rods restrain pressure thrust so the anchors do not have to. Absorbs lateral movement while carrying its own thrust load.
- Hinged expansion joint — pinned to allow angular rotation in one plane only. Used in sets of two or three to absorb movement in a piping leg.
- Gimbal expansion joint — angular rotation in any plane, with pressure thrust restrained. The choice for complex three-dimensional routing.
- Flanged and welded-end configurations in ANSI 150#, 300# and higher ratings.
Pressure Thrust: The Thing That Gets Missed
An unrestrained bellows under pressure generates enormous axial force — pressure multiplied by the bellows effective area, which is larger than the pipe bore. On an 8-inch joint at 150 psi that is several thousand pounds trying to push the piping apart.
That load has to be carried by main anchors or by tie rods on the joint itself. Systems fail when a joint is dropped into a line that was never anchored for it. If you are not certain your anchors are rated for the thrust, tell us and we will quote a tied configuration.
Bellows Materials
321 and 316L stainless cover most general service. For aggressive media we supply Monel 400, Hastelloy C-276 and C-22, Inconel for high-temperature and thermal-cycling duty, and other alloys on request. Bellows material is selected against the media, not just the line spec — a bellows is thin-walled, so corrosion that a schedule 40 pipe would tolerate for years can perforate it quickly.
Internal liners are specified where flow velocity would otherwise induce bellows flutter, and external covers where the joint is exposed to traffic or insulation work.
Expansion Joints vs. Metal Hose
Both absorb movement, and the right answer depends on the movement type. Expansion joints handle axial, lateral and angular movement in a short face-to-face dimension, which suits pipe runs and equipment nozzles. Flexible metal hose handles larger offsets and continuous flexing over a longer live length, which suits pump connectors, loading arms and anything that moves during operation rather than just with temperature.

Replacing an Existing Joint
Most requests are replacements. If the tag is legible, send the part number and we will cross-reference it. If not, we need face-to-face dimension, flange size and rating, bolt circle, and the service conditions — a photo of the installation with a tape measure in frame usually gets us there.
