Seven Questions Worth Asking Any Supplier
1. What is actually on your shelf right now?
"We can get it" and "we have it" are different answers, and the difference shows up during a turnaround. Ask specifically about the grades you use most — A193 B7, B7M, A320 L7, A453 660 — in the sizes and lengths your flange schedules actually call for.
2. Can you cut and thread here, or does it ship out?
An odd-length stud is a same-day item if the supplier cuts and threads in-house, and a week if it goes to a third party. Ask where the machine is.
3. What documentation comes with it?
MTRs, certificates of conformance, and PMI where the spec requires it. If your QA group needs traceability, confirm the supplier can produce it before the order rather than after.
4. Will you kit it?
Bolt-up kits assembled per joint — studs, nuts, and the matching gasket in one bag — save real time in the field versus three line items the crew has to reconcile at the flange. Not everyone does it.
5. What happens at 2 a.m.?
Turnarounds and unplanned outages do not respect business hours. Ask whether there is a call-out number and who answers it.
6. Are you set up in our procurement system?
If your plant buys through Ariba or requires SAM.gov registration, a supplier who is not enrolled means a manual PO workaround every single time. Worth confirming up front.
7. Do you carry diversity or small business status?
If your organization has supplier diversity targets, woman-owned, minority-owned, or small business certification affects whether the spend counts toward them.
