Rubber Gasket Materials Compared: EPDM vs Viton vs Nitrile vs Neoprene

"Rubber gasket" covers half a dozen elastomers with very different chemistries, and picking by feel is how gaskets end up swollen, hardened, or dissolved in service. The fastest way to select is by two questions: what's the media, and what's the temperature?

Quick Comparison

Material Temp range Best for Avoid
EPDM -60 to 300°F Water, steam, glycols, dilute acids/caustics, outdoor UV Oils, fuels, solvents
Nitrile (Buna-N) -40 to 250°F Petroleum oils, fuels, hydraulic fluid Ozone, ketones, strong acids
Viton (FKM) -15 to 400°F Aggressive chemicals, fuels, high temp Hot steam, ketones, amines
Neoprene -40 to 230°F Moderate oils, refrigerants, weathering Strong oxidizers
Silicone -80 to 450°F Extreme temps, FDA/food contact Fuels, oils, steam

EPDM vs Viton: The Most Common Toss-Up

If the service is water, steam, or glycol, EPDM wins — it handles hot water and steam that will destroy Viton, at a fraction of the cost. If the service involves hydrocarbons, fuels, concentrated acids, or temperatures pushing 400°F, Viton is worth every penny. The one trap: Viton in hot steam service fails early, and EPDM in oil swells within days. Neither is a universal gasket.

When Rubber Isn't Enough

Above roughly 400°F, in high pressure classes, or in mixed/unknown chemical streams, step up to PTFE, compressed fiber, or graphite-based gaskets. Elastomer sheet is a Class 125/150, low-stress solution — great where it fits, expensive where it doesn't.

Specialty Grades

Food and pharmaceutical service should specify FDA-compliant white nitrile, EPDM, or platinum-cured silicone. Outdoor and marine service favors EPDM or neoprene for ozone resistance. For abrasive slurries, a thicker 1/4" red rubber or nitrile insert gasket cushions flange faces.

Custom Rubber Gaskets, Any Shape

We cut custom rubber gaskets from EPDM, nitrile, Viton, neoprene, silicone, and cloth-inserted sheet — one-offs or production runs. Drop your dimensions or a drawing note in the quote form above, or call (979) 233-6223, and we'll price it in 1–2 business hours.
